Welshpool town centre

For many years, the W&L threaded through the narrow streets and between the houses of Welshpool, starting adjacent to the main line station, then climbing over the Montgomery canal and continuing the climb all the way to Raven Square and beyond.

These scenes date from August 2014, when the main line had been restored to double track from Welshpool towards Newtown. Here, the 0954 train, one of the extra services enabled by the double track section, leaves for Shrewsbury. The current station is just to the east of the original station, which remains as a home to various retail outlets. The old mixed gauge cattle dock is just visible beneath the undergrowth - this has now been cleared again, and the mixed gauge section can be easily seen.

The canal passes under the old W&L route, now a footpath into the town. A clerk can be seen hard at work in the old canal office nearby. The 'not-quite-to-scale' pointwork and the abstract locomotive are both sited near where the W&L crossed the road, now the car park entrance. Finally, No.12 Joan waits to depart next to a bi-lingual sign.

The display board is one of a number on display giving much information about the history of the line
