Gallery 2 - Miscellany

The third and fourth photos show the old mixed-gauge cattle dock in Welshpool, which has recently been recovered from the undergrowth. This is adjacent to the Welshpool by-pass roundabout, and the service entrance to the Tesco store. Construction of the by-pass and relocation of the Cambrian main railway line slightly to the south resulted in this area being difficult to recognise from pre-preservation days. The middle photo shows one of the new Town Trail information panels - location 2 is the cattle dock. Although some deterioration has occurred over the years, the structure is in fair condition overall.

The trail continues through the town, following the old route of the W&L as near as possible, ending at Raven Square, the preservation terminus. The climate concerning railway preservation has changed considerably over the years, and while the preservation company was denied the town section in the 1960s, if the enterprise was starting up now, it is quite possible that the town section would be welcomed.

Some 20 years ago, the Steam Gala hosted a demonstration of the then prototype 'Parry People Mover'; some years later, it was the subject of a slightly unlikely proposal to run a service through Welshpool town centre. The 'tram' ran on a temporary track at Raven Square, and was powered by a flywheel which was run up to speed while stationary at a short length of powered rail. The prototype eventually became the Class 139, of which two operate on the Stourbridge Town branch in the West Mdlands. Not surprisingly, nothing came of the Welshpool proposal.
