Castle Caereinion, Coppice Lane and Golfa
A selection of photos mostly taken in 2007, with the aid of a Nikon 80-300mm zoom lens and using 35mm film.
Starting at top left, a train for Llanfair has just left Golfa and is approaching the summit of the line, before descending to Sylfaen halt. Next, the same train is approaching Golfa after the long climb from Raven Square. Vegetation clearance recently on the lower stretch after New Drive has opened out the views westwards.
A long shot from Cwm Lane, high above Castle Caereinion village shows a later train on the same day approaching Coppice Lane, before the descent into the Banwy valley. The level crossing gates have now been replaced by an automatic crossing - not exactly heritage but offering improved safety for train crews, and better control over speeding motorists. In early morning mist, the next view is looking eastwards from near Coppice Lane.
A quiet interlude between trains at Castle Caereinion; in the early years of preservation, trains terminated here, and for a short time a few years ago, trains passed here when on the high summer timetable. During 2020, trains have again terminated here as a temporary measure, due to winter track maintenance towards Welshpool being delayed by the COVID-19 restrictions.
