 Gallery 1 - Miscellany

For the moment, these Gallery pages contain a selection of photos of the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway. These have been taken by myself, mostly in the last 10 years or so.

The first 6 images were taken in April 2013, using an 80-300mm zoom lens and 35mm black & white film, which I think gives a distinctively different appearance compared to digital media.

At top left, No.2 / 823 is running round at Castle Caereinion, a procedure not generally used. On 2-train service days, trains pass at Cyfronydd as this gives a more useful amount of time for visitors to have a look round Llanfair station, and get refreshments in the Tea Room. The loop at Sylfaen halt, which used to be used on Steam Gala days, is currently not in use, and the points have been removed.

The next photos show the train on and near Dolarddyn level crossing. Recent work here has included renewal of the level crossing and vegetation clearance to open out the views once more. Regular drainage clearance work is also needed in the area.

The first colour picture shows a train waiting to pass at Cyfronydd, this photo being taken from the the adjoining field. The last two photos are at Golfa halt. Trains sometimes pause here after the climb from Raven Square to build up steam pressure if needs be. The long climb at 1 in 29 can be interesting on damp days, particularly for the first return journey, when the adhesion on the rails can be quite low.
